Getting Started

Officially posting my first ever blog...I am a firm believer in teaching our students how to think and act responsibly. I hope to share some of the projects that we are working on at all levels of instruction in our Libraries. Hopefully, you will be able to "borrow" some of the better one. Feedback is always welcome.

It is important that we help all students that we come across. We have some ESL students that have a difficult time finding reading materials in our library. Recently, I started a project that I had the students create YouTube videos giving book talks about various books in our library.

The goal was simple, to get non English speaking students to pick up books and materials that they normally would not be comfortable with. We have a very limited book budget and rarely get new materials. We have to work with what we are given. Overall, the project was a success. It got all of the students excited about reading and sharing their thoughts and opinions in a positive way.

Here was the project...
1) Choose a book that you can read in 1 sitting. (Not a chapter book...yet)
2) Read the book and fill out our general book report form.
3) Create a script based on your report. Important that students are not simply reading their report. The most popular way to do this was by using iPads and making a Keynote presentation. Each slide was viewed like a teleprompter.
4) Video your presentation using iPads and then upload to YouTube. We have them unlisted so they cannot easily be accessed without code.
5) Create a QR Code that links the book directly to the video and attach it the the book.

We then tagged as many books as possible so that the students would have access to the online videos.

WEEKLY UPDATE-
All districts that are one-to-one have some form of MDM (Device Management System). Here is a link that I came across that discuses the issues raised with them. All students and staff in the district are impacted in some way by the MDM and how it is set up.

  1. This is a very creative way to complete book reports. I love how easy it is to make movies using the iPad. I've worked with iMovie, Stop Motion Studio, and the built in screen recorder in iOS 11 to make videos for projects and for professional development.
